Poetical Assumption: Parrot (chuckle, cackle)
Poetry and sculpture. It seems like there is no "and" but a "/", "?" or simply a void between them.
Can it be, that to a certain extent, poetry and sculpture always speak of their own premises?
The gap between future possibilities, past achievements, present confusion?
Let's, for once, assume that everyday life is fundamentally prosaic. And that society is haunted by the dream of accumulation, surge.
Surge (definition): a powerful rush of emotions, large economical increase, a great natural force such as waves or tide.
Like in any work of literary fiction, there must be a reason, a story to be told.
Do I sometimes feel like I want to be swept away, carried by a greater cause?
Do I feel ashamed of my own lazy body? Does it hurt to be at the wrong place at the wrong time?

Oben stehende Auszüge stammen aus Karl Larssons neustem Buch "Parrot" das anlässlich seiner gleichnamigen Ausstellung bei Index in Stockholm erschienen ist. Larsson wird eine Lecture halten, die die Figur des Papageis als Ausgangspunkt für seine Auseinandersetzung mit Werken von Marcel Broodhaers (1924-76) nimmt.

"That’s not me" versammelt verschiedene Schnappschüsse der Künstlerin Nuri Koerfer, die in beinahe zehn Jahren (2001-2009) entstandenen sind. Auf Urlaubsreisen oder in ihrem Heimatland Schweiz liess sie sich mit Tierkadavern ablichten. Während Koerfer posierend die Rolle eines skurill erscheinenden Fotomodels einnimmt, agierten Freunde und Familie als Fotografen. Die Publikation enstand in einer Auflage von 500 Stück und ist von Nuri Koerfer signiert.
Corner College und Motto Zürich freuen sich, dass Nuri Koerfer anlässlich ihrer Buchvernissage für ein kurzes Gespräch im Corner College anwesend sein wird.
Die Präsentation erfolgt in Zusammenarbeit mit Kodoji Press, Baden.

Die Künstlerin Emma Nilssons lässt aus Naturdarstellungen des 19. Jahrhunderts artifizielle, visionäre oder phantastische Wesen entstehen. Sie fertigt diese aus zerschnittenen Radierungen, die sich teils idealisiert oder vermeintlich wissenschaftlich geben, aber stets der Phantasie entspringen. So entstehen Bildwelten, die sich offensichtlich auf reale Gegebenheiten in unserer Welt beziehen, sich aber in einer distanzierten Künstlichkeit von eben dieser wiederum abheben.
Über die Festtage wird Emma Nilsson ein Schaufenster im Perla-Mode mit ihren Bildwelten bespielen und so einen angenehmen Gegensatz zu den künstlich naturalistisch inszenierten Weihnachtauslagen anderer Geschäfte schaffen.
Diese Veranstaltung findet in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Artist-in-Residence-Programm von Index - Wort und Wirkung statt und wird von Miriam Erni begleitet.

"What would it mean to win?"
ReCoCo - Life Under Representational Regimes

Der Film “What Would It Mean To Win?” wurde während der
Blockaden des G8-Gipfels in Heiligendamm in Deutschland im
Juni 2007 aufgenommen. In ihrem ersten gemeinsamen Film
fokussieren die Regisseurin Zanny Begg und der Regisseur
Oliver Ressler damit den aktuellen Stand der Anti-Global-
isierungsbewegung. Der Film kombiniert dokumentarisches
Bildmaterial mit Interviews und Animationssequenzen und ist
anhand von drei für die Bewegung wichtigen Fragen
strukturiert: Wer sind wir? Was ist unsere Macht? Was würde
es bedeuten zu gewinnen?
Beinahe zehn Jahre nach “Seattle” erforscht der Film die
Auswirkungen, welche die gerne mit Anti-Globalisierungs-
bewegung bezeichneten Zusammenschlüsse verschiedener
Gruppen auf die zeitgenössische Politik hatte. Seattle wird
denn auch als Geburtsort der “Bewegung der Bewegungen”
beschrieben und markiert einen Zeitpunkt, an dem sich der
Widerstand gegen die kapitalistische Globalisierung in den
Industriestaaten manifestierte: Das neue soziale Subjekt –
die Multitude – betrat die politische Landschaft. In den
letzten Jahren bekundet die „Anti-Globalisierungs-
bewegung“ Schwierigkeiten ihre Interessen anzubringen,
was mitunter mit der Änderung der globalen Politik nach
den Anschlägen am 11. September 2001 in New York
Zusammenhang steht.
Oliver Ressler wird innerhalb der Ausstellungs- und
Gesprächsreihe "ReCoCo: Life Under Representational
Regimes", die von Siri Peyer und Joshua Simmon
kuratiert wird, eine Einführung zum Film machen, der
anschliessend gezeigt wird. ReCoCo - Life Under
Representational Regimes untersucht die Wertvorstellungen,
die sich seit dem Beginn der modernen Demokratie etabliert
haben und die in eine Krise geraten sind. Die Ausstellung
parallel zur Film-/Vortragsreihe im Corner College findet im
White Space statt.
ReCoCo wird finanziell von Kultur Stadt Zürich, dem österreichischen Kulturforum, der Ernst und Olga Gubler- Hablützel Stiftung und der Georges und Jenny Bloch-Stiftung unterstützt.

In any case, it’s shameful that it took directors three full decades – three full decades of generally static, tedious “movies” – to remember that movies should really move, that the camera can and should be a mobile, vibrant participant in an exciting process: the transmission of events onto celluloid. "So geht Revolution"
ReCoCo - Life Under Representational Regimes

„Join the Revolution!“, „I fight for my rights!“, „Viva la libertad!“, „Radikalisiert das Leben!“ - Auf den ersten Blick sind dies Parolen und Slogans aus dem Wörterbuch der neuen sozialen Bewegungen. Die Slogans und Parolen stammen allesamt aus kommerziellen Werbeanzeigen, die in den letzten Jahren ihren Weg in die Medienöffentlichkeit fanden. Seit den 60er Jahren hat die Werbeindustrie die Bilderwelten linken und alternativen Protests für sich „entdeckt“. Mit Ikonen des Protests, deren Parolen, ihren Zeichen und Symbolen lässt sich gut Werbung machen. Che Guevara, Karl Marx, Lenin, Gandhi, Mao oder Ulrike Meinhof, Straßenschlachten und Friedensdemos, rote Fahnen, Hammer und Sichel oder geballte Fäuste fliessen in die Werbung ein. Die Sammlung „so geht Revolution“ - Werbung & Revolte des Ludwigsburger Kulturwissenschaftlers Rudi Maier umfasst derzeit ca. 3000 derartige Werbeanzeigen aus den Jahren 1967 bis heute. Die Sammlung zeigt, wie sich in der heutigen Konsumgesellschaft Protest und Pop, Macht und Mode, Demonstration und Design auf wundersame Weise ergänzen. Mit ihr lässt sich fragen, was Begriffe wie Freiheit, Radikalisierung und Revolution heute bedeuten. Mit dem Vortrag und den Filmbeispielen soll ein klein wenig Klärung in Sachen Freiheit und Revolution geleistet werden, nicht mehr, aber auch nicht weniger. Die Sammlung will, frei nach Karl Marx, „den bestehenden Verhältnissen ihre eigene Melodie vorsingen, um sie zum Tanzen zu bringen.“

Neuwerk ist eine Zeitschrift für Designwissenschaft und bietet einen kritischen Zugang zu Design mit Fokus auf Methoden, Designgeschichte und Reflexion der materiellen Kultur. Im Corner College präsentieren die Herausgeber Saskia Glandien, Eva Kristin Stein und Florian Walzel ihr Heft zum ersten Mal in der Schweiz.
Im Verlauf des Abends wird sich zeigen, wie es tatsächlich um gutes Design steht. Es wird nicht nur in der Zeitschrift gelesen, sondern nebenbei auch gesägt und geschraubt - soviel sei vorab verraten. Und wenn alles klappt, können sich die Anwesenden selbst auf ihrer Arbeit ausruhen - pünktliches Erscheinen ist deshalb von Vorteil.

Die Fachzeitschrift Neuwerk erscheint jährlich und hat zum Ziel, der jungen, deutschsprachigen Designforschung eine Plattform zu geben. Gegründet wurde sie im Studiengang MA Design Studies an der Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle.

Seit zehn Jahren opponieren Künstler, Aktivisten, Philosophen und Einwohner gemeinsam gegen das grösste neoliberale Stadtentwicklungsprojekt in der norditalienischen Metropole. Die Auseinandersetzung bietet die Gelegenheit, instituierende Praxen zu experimentieren und das Konzept einer Stadtentwicklung von unten ansatzweise umzusetzen. Der Vortrag illustriert und reflektiert das Vorgehen von Isola Art Center und out-Office for Urban Transformation, von den Initiativen im öffentlichen Raum über die Besetzung einer ehemaligen Fabrik zur Schaffung eines Kunstzentrums neuen Typs, als Diaspora ohne festen Wohnsitz im Isola-Viertel.

Lefty - Erinnerung an einen Toten in Brooklyn
Graffiti Nostalgia ist eine offene Filmreihe zum Thema Graffiti. Bereits in den 80er-Jahren entstanden zahlreiche Filme, teilweise fiktionale wie auch dokumentarische, die sich dem Phänomen aus verschiedenen Perspektiven nähern. "Graffiti Nostalgia" zeigt einige dieser heute teilweise zu Klassikern avancierten Filme. Die Reihe wird von Rémi Jaccard und Stefan Wagner zusammengestellt und beabsichtigt aus einer neutralen Perspektive verschiedene Formen der Graffiti-Rezeption aufzuzeigen.
Die
Eröffnet wird die Reihe von "Lefty - Erinnerung an einen Toten in Brooklyn" (BRD, 1978, 87 min) des deutschen Dokumentarfilmers Max Helmut Rehbein, der von 1978-1980 eine New York-Filmtrilogie verfasste. Der für das Fernsehen gedreht Film beginnt mit dem Tod des Gang-Leaders Lefty der "Sex Boys". Das Filmteam folgt verschiedenen Akteueren in ihrem Bandenleben, aber zeigt auch die Arbeit der Polizei in dem heruntergekommen Brooklyn der 70er Jahre. In diesem Film spielen Graffiti eine untergeordnete Rolle. Nur kurz sieht man, wie die Gang-Members taggen, einer Form des Gang-Graffitis. Als sozialkritische Studie vermeidet es der Film die damalige Zeit romantisieren und zeigt vielmehr die schwerwiegenden sozialen Probleme Brooklyns. Der Film wurde mit der Goldenen Kamera (1978) sowie dem Adolf Grimme Preis (1979) ausgezeichnet.

Öffentliche Porträtmalerei-Sitzung
Chuck Morris
Nach der öffentliche Recherchewoche souvereines undressed im September 2010 kehrt Chuck Morris nach Zürich zurück. Als Gast verbringt er als Königin einen Tag bei Corner College, wo ihre Majestät bereits letzten Herbst zur kommenden Königin gekrönt wurde. Als zeremonieller Rahmen vor der Audienz Chuck Morris im Theaterhaus Gessnerallee wird die Kunst der Porträtmalerei in einer Malerei-Performance zelebriert: Chuck Morris wird als souveräner Herrscher von der Malerin Svetlana Tschumi-Mazoulevskaja porträtiert. Ihre Majestät produzieren dadurch Geschichte und werden bis in alle Ewigkeit aufbewahrt. Das Porträt ist die Königin, die Königin ist das Porträt.
Die Veranstaltung findet im Rahmen von Freischwimmer 2011 in Kooperation mit dem Theaterhaus Gessnerallee statt. Die entstandenen Porträts werden anschliessend Teil der Vorstellungen im Theaterhaus Gessnerallee am Mittwoch 11. und Donnerstag 12. Mai 2011 sein.

Ein Abend über das Schreiben als aktuell verbreitete Praxis Bildender Künstler. Es wird präsentiert, gelesen und sich unterhalten. Dazu legt Hans-Christian Dany abstrakten Hip Hop, Afro und Offbeat auf.

Anlass ist das im letzten Herbst erschienene "Sehr verfahren", ein Taschenbuch mit pulp-touch, das fünf Kurzgeschichten vereint. Erzählungen, die vom Unterwegssein, von Wochenendausflügen, Wallfahrt, Richtungslosigkeit und Zeitreisen handeln. Visuelle Information hatte die Ausgangspunkte für diese Geschichten geliefert, die Hinrich Sachs u.a. bei Birgit Kempker, Hans-Christian Dany, der Neuseeländerin Ruth Buchanan, und dem Amerikaner Mark v. Schlegell für dieses Künstlerbuch in Auftrag gegeben hat. Ein eigentümlichen Prozess von Kreation und Reaktion steuert es.

Graffiti Nostalgia ist eine offene Filmreihe zum Thema Graffiti. Bereits in den 80er-Jahren entstanden zahlreiche Filme, teilweise fiktionale wie auch dokumentarische, die sich dem Phänomen aus verschiedenen Perspektiven nähern. "Graffiti Nostalgia" zeigt einige dieser heute teilweise zu Klassikern avancierten Filme. Die Reihe wird von Rémi Jaccard und Stefan Wagner zusammengestellt und beabsichtigt aus einer neutralen Perspektive verschiedene Formen der Graffiti-Rezeption aufzuzeigen.

"Wild Style" (USA, 1983, 82 min, Regie: Charlie Ahearn) gilt als Klassiker unter Filmen, die Hip Hop, Breakdance und Graffiti verbinden. Spektakuläre Bilder verschiedener Settings in der Bronx und der Auftritt zahlreicher Musiker und Musikerinnen machen "Wild Style" zu einem historischen Dokument, obwohl das Drehbuch fiktional war. Der Graffiti-Künstler Lee Quinones spielt in der Hauptrolle die Figur "Zoro", um darin die Freiheit seiner Kunst zu thematisieren.

Das einmal im Jahr erscheinende Zeitbuch Respektive wird von Lukas Germann, Pablo Müller, Nicole Peter, Herr R. und Frau T. in Zürich herausgegeben und widmet sich Themen aus Kultur, Politik und Alltag. Dabei bietet das Zeitbuch Raum für gedankliche und argumentative Experimente mit der Perspektive einer Kritik der bürgerlich-kapitalistischen Gesellschaft in Zeiten, in denen die Praxis einer solchen Kritik weitgehend fehlt.
Um 20 Uhr Redaktor sprechen Lukas Germann und Redaktorin Nicole Peter über Respektive und die neue Ausgabe.

Sound Interjection was defined concept by Industrial Designer Sam Hecht to figure out Yuri Suzuk`s work. Sam Hecht writes: "Sound interjection is defined as a person contributing to the atmosphere of a room by way of sound.Often too much emphasis is put on the visual when it comes to the use of our environment. I believe that what yuri has been doing is to show a new dimension to the conversation between objects and people. Sound interjection is playful but it is also an illustration of what is possible with the manipulation of product systems."
Yuri Suzuki will speak about his perspective of using sound as material. Also want to speak about relation between sound and human.

Corner College freut sich sehr, dass für den Abend die Assistentin von Organhaus Lei Siyu anreisen wird, um einerseits die Filme kurz vorzustellen, andererseits um die Situation unabhängiger Kunsträume in China zu erläutern.

During her visit, she will talk about her own practice, the Art Writing scene in London and the prominent figure of Maria Fusco, who is currently Head of Art Writing at Goldsmiths College. Fusco is at the forefront of the current London scene where readings, performance and poetry merge together to form a new understanding of text based performance in art.
Nicole Bachmann received her MFA at Goldsmiths in 2010 and lives between London and Zurich.

When the Three Gorges Dam is completed in 2009, it will be the world’s largest, but its reservoir will also submerge many villages and displace thousands of residents. Preserved in verse by the poet Li Bai, Fengjie in Chongqing is one of these unfortunate villages. Since the water began to rise in January 2002, the villagers’ lives have revolved around the issue of migration. The troubles and strengths of these villagers, gripped by anxiety toward the future, surface as the spectacle of migration begins. Poignantly capturing the transition of an era, the film leaves a beautiful echo that resonates with the flow of time yet to be sung.

Book Notes 1998-2010 (2h 3min)
During three weeks Corner College shows a two hour slide show of the passionated book collector Christoph Schifferli. Since more than ten years he measures his collecting activities - books, artists, sellers and places - with his camera.

"I started using a digital camera in the late 90s, mostly in art exhibitions were I took pictures of the artwork together with the small tags on the side stating the name of the artist, etc. I later started using the camera also for books, taking a quick picture of the cover with some spreads and the impressum (and possibly of the price if it was a rare book). Since the date is automatically registered when you take a digital picture, I still had to take note of the location (these were pre-GPS times). So I started taking pictures of the gallerist, artist or bookdealer to keep a record of the place or context. Anyway - I still do this all the time. Finally these pictures also became a visual diary - but this happened more coincidentally and as a side effect, and I became aware of the diary effect much later in the process.For the one-sentence description: it's really a visual notebook with pictures recording and documenting my collecting finds and wants."

Presentation and video excerpts by Mara Montoya
The question of “memory” is associated with the question of time, imprints, traces and traditions. In its collective and social dimensions “memory” constitutes a political tool for the promotion of cohesion and is at the same time interwoven with questions of individual and shared identities.

Mara Montoya's talk deals with the intersections of personal history, collective memory and how they connect with each other through events, restricting her presentation to Congo related movies. Within her talk she will show her video essay “Memories of Glory” (2011, 12 Min.) which explores the symbolic core of Brussels through an analysis of the Royal Park, embodying the city's architecture, politics, and Belgium's relation to the Congo. In the first part of her presentation Mara will reflect and try to understand the function of remembering, which is not the opposite of forgetting, but rather its lining. As Chris Marker said, “We do not remember, we rewrite memory much as history is rewritten”.
In the second part, Mara will point out personal history exploring a video excerpt from “Good Bye Mandima” (2010, 10 Min.) by Robert-Jan Lacombe, where the French/Dutch filmmaker looks back on the day of his departure to France. The story is based on a panoramic photography where he recalls his first ten years living inMandima, Zaire, now Democratic Republic of the Congo. In the third part, Mara will show “History Lessons” (2003, 5 Min.), where Belgian video artist Sarah Vanagt filmed a history class in the edge of Lake Kuvu in Rwanda. The children in this classroom where born in 1994, the year of the genocide. Since 1994, history has been officially suspended from the school’s curriculum. For ten years, the teacher of this class has been waiting for new, rewritten manuals. In this last part Mara will study the collective memory and mention historiography.

John Berger schreibt, das Haustier sei wie der Zoo und der Teddybär eine Erfindung des 19. Jahrhunderts. Es markiert den Sieg der Stadt über das Land als bevorzugten Lebensraum. In domestizierter Form repräsentiert das Haustier ein Stück Natur im Wohnzimmer, der Sphäre des Privaten. Wenn ein Haustier verschwindet, verliert sich etwas Privates im öffentlichen Raum. Suchanzeigen der Besitzer auf der Straße dokumentieren diesen Verlust auf anonyme Weise.

In ihrer Lecture spannt Nele Wohlatz einen Bogen von den Tagebüchern ihrer Oma zu den Vermisstenanzeigen verlorener Haustiere. Diese persönlichen Dokumente, denen Fragen an die Öffentlichkeit eingeschrieben sind, interpretieren auf populäre Weise ästhetische Konzepte ihrer Zeit. Die Lecture stellt den Prozess des Lesens dieser Einschreibungen in den Vordergrund und gewährt einen Einblick in Wohlatzs offenes Archiv: ein Film, eine Videoinstallation, Gespräche. Der Abend beginnt mit der Videoinstallation Das Zimmer meiner Oma (1989/2009) und endet mit der Filmvorführung von Schneeränder (45 min. 2009).

Ein Film über Martin Hodel

Geister auf Gletschern. Da geht einer. Ist keine dreißig Jahre alt und fällt in eine Gletscherspalte. Gefunden wird er am nächsten Tag. Tot. Der Tote ist Martin Hodel. Künstler. Teil des Trios Hodel/Schumacher/Clavadetscher, das Anfang der 90er-Jahre von sich reden machte; mit Aktionen, die kaum sichtbar waren, umso mehr aber erzählbar blieben.
Martin Hodels 90er-Jahre sind Dada. Denn über allem schwebt König Ubus Pataphysik, dieser von Alfred Jarry geprägte Begriff zur Wissenschaft des Absurden. Daran knüpften Hodel/Schumacher/Clavadetscher an, darauf bezieht sich auch REFLECTIONS AND GHOSTS.
Es ist eine Mischung aus unbedingter Nähe, dokumentarischer Distanznahme und performativem Charakter, die den einzelnen Begegnungen in REFLECTIONS AND GHOSTS Dringlichkeit und Gewicht geben, mit einer Leichtigkeit, die den Zuschauer zuweilen mit einem Augenzwinkern zurücklässt. Das hätte Hodel gefallen.

Im Rahmen der Publikation "Traditional/Modular/Phenomenal" steht im Corner College ein Tag lang Schriftgestaltung im Mittelpunkt. Durch das Praktizieren der humanistischen Antiqua wird der Fokus an diesem kompakten Workshop auf die Schriftgrundlagen gesetzt. Es wird mit Pinsel und Gouache, Bleistift, Marker, Schablonen etc. gearbeitet. Material steht für 20 Personen bereit. Der Workshop ist an gestalterisch Interessierte, Type-Nerds oder solche die es werden wollen ausgerichtet. Herzlich hereinspaziert!

Die Publikation "Traditional/Modular/Phenomenal – Schriftgestaltung in Luzern" wird am Abend präsentiert. Das Buch beinhaltet Methoden welche an der Fachklasse zum Thema Schrift vermittelt werden. Der Bogen wird weit gespannt und anhand einer breiten Auswahl Studenten Arbeiten treffend illustriert.

Die Schönsten Schweizer Bücher 2010

Das Bundesamts für Kultur veranstaltet jährlich den Wettbewerb der schönsten Schweizer Bücher. Dieses Jahr haben sich die Modalitäten und der Ort im Gegensatz zu den Vorjahren geändert. Neu findet die Ausstellung während drei Tagen im Helmhaus Zürich statt. Das Corner College wurde vom Bundesamt für Kultur eingeladen, zwei Gesprächsrunden zu gestalten. Diese finden am Samstag 25. Juni, um 15 Uhr und Sonntag, 26. Juni um 11 Uhr statt.

In Beauty We Trust?
Auf Einladung des Bundesamts für Kultur veranstaltet das Corner College zwei Gesprächsrunden, die aktuelle Themen der Gestaltung und Produktion von Büchern aufgreifen. Gestalter, Verleger und Wissenschaftler diskutieren über die Bedeutung des Wettbewerbs der schönsten Schweizer Bücher und über mögliche neue Formen des Buchs.

In der ersten Gesprächsrunde diskutieren verschiedene Personen über den Wettbewerb als solchen sowie den subjektive Begriff "Schönheit", den es stets von Neuem zu definieren und reflektieren gilt. Die Aufmerksamkeit verlagerte sich in den letzten Jahren von ausschliesslich handwerklichen Kriterien hin zu einer ganzheitlichen Betrachtung des Buchs. Haben ästhetische Faktoren die handwerklichen Qualitäten überflügelt? Was leistet ein Wettbewerb der schönsten Bücher im Zeitalter der Digitalisierung?
Es diskutieren Cornel Windlin, Präsident der Jury der schönsten Schweizer Bücher; der Grafiker Wendelin Hess des Sachbuchverlags Echtzeit; der englische Designkritiker Rick Poynor aus London sowie Catherine Hug, Kuratorin der Kunsthalle Wien. A Stack of Beautiful Swiss Books
In der zweiten Gesprächsrunde rückt das Self- und Independentpublisching in den Aufmerksamkeitsradar. Buchproduktion und -vertrieb geraten zunehmend unter wirtschaftlichen Druck. Vor diesem Hintergrund entwickelt sich das Self- und Independent-Publishing zunehmend zu einem autonomen Sektor. Das Buch verändert seine Funktion, sein Spielraum erweitert sich laufend. Welche Rollen überniehmen dabei die Grafikdesigner? Welchen ökonomischen Rahmenbedingungen setzen sich die visuellen Gestalter aus, wenn sie mit grösstmöglicher Autonomie arbeiten wollen?

Eine Grammatik der dritten Person

Die Regeln der Grammatik sehen verschiedene Möglichkeiten vor, über die dritte Person zu sprechen. Mit den Charakterzügen einer Person oder eines Gegenstands ausgestattet, stellt dieses „Etwas“ immer eine Distanz zur ersten Person des „ich“ her. Zwischen den Standpunkten der ersten und der dritten Person entwirft die Gruppenausstellung einen Raum, der von privaten Interieurs, Warenauslagen und musealen Displays geprägt ist.
Corner College freut sich mit „Eine Grammatik der dritten Person“ eine Ausstellung zu präsentieren, die massgeblich im Rahmen eines Forschungsprojekts der Kuratoren Tido von Oppeln und Burkhard Meltzer an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste seit 2009 entstanden ist.
"Eine Grammatik der dritten Person" wird ermöglicht durch die finanzielle Unterstützung der Pro Helvetia, Schweizer Kulturstiftung, der Spanish Cultural Action AC/E, dem IFA, Institut für Auslandbeziehungen und dem Institut für Theorie (ith).

Who is Bozo Texino? is the picaresque chronicle of a 16-year search for the source of a ubiquitous rail graffiti—a simple sketch of a blank-staring character with an infinity-shaped hat and the scrawled moniker, “Bozo Texino”—a drawing seen on railcars for over 80 years. Daniel rode freight trains across the West carrying a Super-8 sound camera and a 16mm Bolex, interviewing tramps and brakemen and in his quest discovered the roots of a folkloric tradition that has gone mostly unnoticed for a century.

Taking inspiration from Beat artists Robert Frank and Jack Kerouac, the film functions both as a subcultural documentary and a stylized fable on wanderlust, outsider identity, and escape.

A rather new medium of interaction between bands and fans are unofficial videos, or “UnVids.” As opposed to traditional industry promotion techniques (label produces album/video, fan watches video/buys album), this new mode of promotion is nonlinear, and potentially self reinforcing. The following example is one illustration of this:
Several months ago, Dino Rossi made an UnVid for the band Coma Cinema. The video quickly received thousands of views after being picked up by a number of music blogs. On a recent visit to the website of Coma Cinema’s label, Dino was surprised to find the unofficial video he had made being used by the label to promote the band.

This is a one example of a complete UnVid cycle: an unofficial video made for a song that was found on a blog, which then ends up on the official label website promoting the band. This represents a new degree of intimacy between the band, label and fan, which until recently was not possible. The degree of involvement of a fan in the production of a music video is far greater than entering an address into google earth and then watching what happens, as in the “interactive” Arcade Fire video. Through the production of UnVids, fans become creative participants rather than merely consumers. Through this production a symbiotic relationship between band and fan is created. In instances where the song did not previously have a video, the video has the potential to become the primary source of publicity for the band as more and more people search for music through sites like youtube and vimeo.
The role of unofficial videos in the promotion of young bands is underestimated. Until recently, there was no forum devoted to the phenomenon of UnVids. This phenomenon developed independently of any music industry infrastructures and continues to independently evolve and grow.

Slow Days Oslo was a creative research event towards a new public art program at Bjørvika, located in the Oslo Harbor. The event was held from August 16th until August 19th, 2011. Slow Days Oslo was developed by Situations, a UK-based curatorial team lead by Claire Doherty. Both Daniel M. and Philip participated in the discussions and events at Slow Days Oslo. Der Maler Patrick Rohner lädt zu einer Begehung eines unbekannten Terrains in den Glarner Alpen ein.

Für seine Landschaftsmalerei zieht sich Rohner manchmal tagelang in die Berge zurück um deren Tektonik und Geologie zu studieren.

Zusammen mit Corner College macht er sich vom Klausenpass zu einem Gletschersee auf. Die Wanderung folgt keinen Wanderwegen, sondern durchquert die Landschaft nach Interesse des Künstlers. Patrick Rohner, der sich in diesem Jahr bei Art en plein air (Môtier) mit einem geologischen Wanderwegnetzwerk beteiligte, wird seine Beobachtungen den Wandernden mitteilen.
Die Begehung ist kostenlos. Teilnehmen kann jede und jeder, der über Trittsicherheit im Gelände und ein Mindestmass an körperlicher Kondition verfügt. Anreise mit den öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln ab Zürich. Für die Exkursion muss ein ganzer Tag eingeplant werden.

What Does Public Mean?
“What Does Public Mean? Art as a participant in the Public Arena” is an anthology edited by Tone Hansen, an artist and research fellow at the Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo. The book focuses on art projects that take place outside of established art institutions in Oslo, Hamburg and San Sebastian. It takes into consideration art and the artist’s function in the public sphere, while also looking at the art world’s role in dealing politically with issues of conflict. “What Does Public Mean? Art as a participant in the Public Arena” was published by Torpedo press, an Oslo-based publisher, in 2006.
The three essays that will be discussed during this session include an introduction by Tone Hansen, “A Frame Around Reality” by Marianne Heier, an Oslo-based artist and “Publicness: The Site-Specificity of a Concept” by Stian Grøgaard, Professor in the department of Fine Art at the Bergen National Academy of the Arts. Im Rahmen der Vortragsreihe „Ästhetik der Subversion“ der ZHdK wird der österreichische Künstler Oliver Ressler eine Auswahl seiner Projekte vorstellen und über die unterschiedlichen Stränge und Ansätze sprechen, die seine künstlerische Praxis ausmachen.

Oliver Ressler Installationen, Arbeiten im Außenraum, Filme und kuratierte Ausstellungen rekurrieren auf Themen wie Ökonomie, Demokratie, Rassismus, Widerstandsformen und gesellschaftliche Alternativen. Ressler Position ist dabei immer parteiisch, die Grenzen zwischen Kunst und Aktivismus verschwimmen. «Wie andere KünstlerInnen, die es darauf abgesehen haben, sich direkt in die politische Sphäre einzubringen, behandelt Ressler die Ästhetik praktisch, als eine Reihe von Werkzeugen, mit denen man einen Job erledigt. Zu diesem Zweck besteht seine Arbeit einmal aus Postern und Videos, ein anderes Mal bezieht sie architektonisch kontingente visuelle Elemente mit ein oder sie benutzt organisatorische oder pädagogische Situationen, um öffentliche Diskussionen und Debatten auszulösen. [...] Resslers Anspruch, sich zwischen verschiedenen, Fiktion und Nicht-Fiktion verbindenden Räumen hin und her zu bewegen, hebt die Gefahr hervor, die KünstlerInnen für die Ordnung der Dinge darstellen können», schreibt Gregory Sholette.

The Exhibitionist is a magazine focused on the practice of exhibition making. The objective of the magazine is to create a platform where curatorial concerns, diverse curatorial models and the formation of a theory of curating are addressed. The Exhibitionist is "made by curators for curators" and published twice a year.

From the rear jacket cover of the book: “In this book Christoph Menke attempts to explain art´s sovereign power over reason without falling into an error common to Adorno´s negative dialectics and Derrida´s deconstruction. The error, which appeared earlier in romanticism, is to conceive of the sovereignty of art as a reflection of the superiority of its knowledge. For art entails no knowledge, and its negativity toward reason cannot be articulated as an insight into the nature of reason: Art is sovereign not despite, but because of, its autonomy.”
During this Theory Tuesdays session we will be plunging directly into the 5th chapter of Menke´s book – the chapter titled: “Aesthetic Sovereignty”. Ideally, the ensuing discussion will try to at once outline core elements of Menke´s argument in relation to aesthetic sovereignty, Adorno, and Derrida, and also to “wrestle-out” the possible implications of these ideas with regards to both producing and viewing visual art today.

LapTopRadio.org is a collective radio project, a mobile, sporadically and often unexpectedly streaming internet radio that organizes a special broadcast. The broadcast "Fight The Power" will draw inspiration from the eponymous Public Enemy song that was broadcasted live and continuously in 1991 on one of Belgrade’s dissident radio station, B92.

Within the context of today’s political and social disruption all around the globe, from Libya to America- protest and radio, music and diffusion, sound and amplification seem to be of relevant importance. The Libyan musician-soldier and Slavoj Ĺ˝iĹľek’s intervention on Wall-Street (after the police forbade the use of megaphones during the occupation) are therefore symbolic: the guitarist seems to handle his guitar like a machinegun whereas the chorus (in the classical sense) denounces with a massive critical voice the iniquitous situation.

The subject of the evening could be summarized as an attempt to analyze the geopolitics and dialectics of protest songs. That is for the theoretical part; pragmatically the broadcast will consist of a collective live atopic sound performance. A number of invited artists, writers, activist and musicians will remotely contribute in real time.

Zürich dehnt sich in Richtung Westen aus: Diverse in die Höhe spriessende Gebäude wandeln das Stadtbild rasant. Die Konsequenz dieser Veränderungen sind zahlreiche Baustellen, die lebendige Produktionsstätten darstellen. Sie entwickeln sich, wachsen stetig und bieten Raum für vielfältige Möglichkeiten. Mittels der Ausstellung "Tearing Down, Building Up" soll sowohl die tatsächliche als auch die metaphorische Barriere der Baustelle aufgebrochen werden.
Für die Ausstellung wurden verschiedene Künstlerinnen und Künstler eingeladen. Vanessa Billy, Les Frerès Chapuisat, Ort Sofort und Christine Zufferey untersuchen die dynamischen Prozesse einer Baustelle, befassen sich mit den verschiedenen Materialien, nähern sich diversen bautechnischen Abläufen an und setzen sich mit Begriffen wie Mikrokosmos und Work-In-Progress auseinander.
Gerahmt wird das Ausstellungsprogramm von zwei Veranstaltungen. Am Samstag den 12. November um 13:45 Uhr findet eine Vorführung mit zwei Filmen im Kino Xenix in Zürich statt. Gezeigt werden Blight (UK, 1996, 11 min) des britischen Künstlers John Smith sowie En Construcción (E, 2001, 125 min) des spanischen Regisseurs José Luis Guerín. In beiden Filmen offenbaren sich die vielseitigen Verknüpfungen zweier sehr unschweizerischen Baustellen und die damit einhergehenden Reaktionen: Die menschliche Facette rückt stärker in den Aufmerksamkeitsbereich.
Am 23. November wird in der Debatten-Serie Art + Argument der Künstler Colin Guillemet, der Kunstwissenschaftler Michael Hiltbrunner, der Kritiker Daniel Morgenthaler und die Kuratorin Sabine Rusterholz die Rolle der Kunst in einer sich stetig weiter entwickelnden Stadt in einem Gespräch in Frage stellen. Die Veranstaltung wird in Englisch geführt und von der Kuratorin Aoife Rosenmeyer moderiert.

On-curating.org is an independant international web-journal focusing on questions around curatorial practice and theory. The newest free downloadable edition deals with aspects of the public sphere, public space, and public art in seven different metropolises around the world. The point of departure was a competition that was held for a master plan for public art in the new Europaallee district in the centre of Zurich, the first such plan in Switzerland.

What functions does public art claim to fulfil in the given economic and social context? What understanding of the public sphere underlies public art? And how does it create room for public activities? We are interested, taking the globally networked space of Europaallee as a starting point, in broadening our perspective and putting up for discussion how artists, curators, urbanists, and cultural studies experts in other cities think and act. This edition of On-Curating.org is a mosaic consisting of different perspectives of different authors from different disciplines from different big cities across the globe. It creates a picture of what the public sphere, public space, and public art can mean today against the background of regional conditions.

Daily Regime of an Institutional Life
Launch: Casco Issues XII
Opening the evening with the film 'Glory of the Garden' (HD-Video, 14 min, 2009) by Marion von Osten, a slow-tempo satire of change in the art institutional structure over the last decades, this evening will focus on the bio-political aspect of an institutional operation. It will reference Katerina Seda's practice, as well as the sociological approach in Mary Kelly, Margaret Harrison and Kay Hunt's ‘Women and Work’ as both put emphasis on the "daily regimes" of villagers and workers. Deductively, we can draw from the daily regimes of different "institutions", ranging from highly established ones to self-organised spaces, and groups, especially in light of Bob Black's article ‘The Abolition of Work’ and the recent article 'Bodies in Alliance and the Politics of the Street' by Judith Butler whereby she criticizes Hannah Arendt’s narrow concept of what action can be. The question then of course would be: what changes do we want and what can we do to the established daily regimes?

After the film screening we will launch the new issue of Casco Issues with the editors Binna Choi and Axel Wieder. Casco Issues is a magazine published by Casco – Office for Art, Design and Theory, which explores recurring issues that emerge from Casco’s programme. It centres on artists' and designers’ writings and other unconventional forms of publishing. The twelfth edition of Casco Issues, ’Generous Structures’, focuses on “playfulness” as a value in critical cultural practice. As a playful inquiry, it positions alternative notions of playing against the grain of neoliberal ideologies of “lifelong learning” and “work as play”.

The Café Society (Part I of II)
Lines
During this first of two, back-to-back, Theory Tuesdays sessions, The Café Society will present their four most recent projects: "trails", "collecthing", "SchplitZing" and "Lines". After their presentation, they will open up a discussion around these four applications. At the end of the session a reader will be handed out, to be read over the following week. The reader includes text excerpts from writings that inspired the four projects. It will be possible to respond to the reader in "Lines" before the second session scheduled on November 29th. Both sessions will be held in English.
The Café Society (Lukas Zimmer & Anthon Astrom) work on the topic of on-screen reading/writing. They create frameworks – rule sets – based on how reading, writing and organization of textual information could work differently. As our daily reading habits change, so must our writing habits and the way we communicate, and ultimately the way we think. Authoring is becoming curating, and the expression of the in-between gains importance over content.

Art slows the progress of a modern metropolis
Colin Guillemet, Michael Hiltbrunner, Daniel Morgenthaler and Sabine Rusterholz debate the place of art in developed cities. They are divided in two opposing teams debate and discuss a motion that they have been assigned. Each participant has been given a position opposing or defending the motion, and each has five minutes to argue their case uninterrupted. Each speaker must play his or her assigned role, regardless of whether they agree or not. Speakers benefit from temporary immunity: what they say during the debate is not necessarily their opinion and they cannot be held to their word afterwards.
This debate takes place in the context of Tearing Down, Building Up, an exhibition with Vanessa Billy, Les Frerès Chapuisat, ortsofort & Christine Zufferey, curated by OPEN FIELD (a collaboration between Isabel Münster & Aoife Rosenmeyer) which continues until 26 November.

The Café Society (Part II of II)
Lines
During this second session, The Café Society will start by opening up a discussion about the reader and experience of using "Lines" to respond to the texts. This session will add a new level of engagement to Theory Tuesdays, in that there will be a discussion around the actual use of the "Lines" application in response to the texts, alongside a more traditional discussion. We will conclude with questions, comments and critique. The session will be held in English.
The Café Society (Lukas Zimmer & Anthon Astrom) work on the topic of on-screen reading/writing. They create frameworks – rule sets – based on how reading, writing and organization of textual information could work differently. As our daily reading habits change, so must our writing habits and the way we communicate, and ultimately the way we think. Authoring is becoming curating, and the expression of the in-between gains importance over content.

Established in 11.11.2011 in New York by artist Triin Tamm, this nomadic collection is assembling, archiving and exhibiting art in the form of 35 mm slides in a looping carousel. The evergrowing project will accessible to the public through various "Slide Shows" organized by guest curators and Triin Tamm herself. Confirmed shows for 2012 include Contemporary Museum of Art, Estonia (Tallinn), Sans Serriffe (Amsterdam), KIM? Contemporary Art Centre, (Riga) and Primetime (New York).

Models For Rehearsing the Script
Achim Lengerer spricht über seine Publikationsreihe Scriptings und die neuste Ausgabe »Scriptings#24 Regarding Bulletin«, die zusammen mit Paul Gangloff, sowie Beiträgen von StudentInnen der Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, NL, entstand.
»Bulletin«, zwischen 1969 und 2001 von der Amsterdamer Galerie Art & Project herausgegeben, war eine auf vier DIN A4 Seiten reduzierte Publikationsreihe, mit jeweils einem KünstlerInnen Beitrag. »Scriptings#24 Regarding Bulletin« nimmt Bezug auf das Original, indem versucht wurde 40 verschiedene Reprints, oder Faksimiles mit einer »Verschiebung« (facsimile with a shift) zu produzieren.
Achim Lengerer lebt als Künstler in Berlin und Amsterdam. In seiner Arbeit beschäftigt er sich mit sprachbezogenen Fragestellungen, die er in Performances oder Rauminstallationen thematisiert. Seit 2009 betreibt er den mobilen Ausstellungsraum und Verlag Scriptings. Scriptings funktioniert als eine diskursive Plattform, ergänzend und parallel zu Lengerers Projekten. KünstlerInnen, AutorInnen, GrafikdesignerInnen, PerformerInnen ebenso wie VerlegerInnen werden zur Teilnahme eingeladen – all jene also, die sich in jeweiligen den Formaten »Skript« und »Text« bedienen.

To celebrate the last Theory Tuesdays session of 2011, we will be screening the "Santiago Sierra" episode of Art Safari with Ben Lewis.
Santiago Sierra is Spain’s anti-capitalist artist and one of the world’s most radical artists. Ben travels with him to the heavily militarized border between North and South Korea, and then to the globalization hub of Dubai.
Art Safari is a BBC documentary series about contemporary artists in the international art scene.

Nicole Bachmann is an artist based in London and Zürich. She suggests a choice of different films. She writes:
"The choice of films reflects what is being produced in London at the moment. There is a strong narrative element which coincides or collides with the images showed alongside. A sort of video essay but maybe with a more de-constructionalist twist which plays on language and imagery and how they go together. A narrative voice accompanies the viewer through the film taking her along the story albeit it being associative and not a straight line. One exception presents EP Park's film where communication and narration are made difficult."

Not reconciled (Nobody knows what a body is capable of), Film still, 2009
Marcelo Expósito will show and discuss parts of his new film «Not reconciled (nobody knows what a body is capable of)». Filmed in Argentina, «Not reconciled (nobody knows what a body is capable of)» is a free adaptation of the drama Hamletmachine by the German playwright Heiner Müller, which was staged in Buenos Aires by the group El Periférico de Objetos in the second half of the nineties. The film runs through several historical moments at which tools derived from the tradition of the aesthetic avant-gardes were put at the service of the social movement, in the Argentinean context, and pauses to look at experiences like the «siluetazo» in the eighties, and the participation of political art collectives in the new Human Rights movements, and in the practice of the «escraches» (the public actions that locate and publicly denounce unpunished collaborators with the massacre perpetrated by the last civil-military dictatorship in Argentina), which the movement H.I.J.O.S. (Sons and Daughters [of Disappeared Detainees] for Identity and Justice, against Oblivion and Silence) began to carry out in the mid-nineties.

Theory Tuesdays is organized around an "Each One, Teach One" participatory model. It's very simple. If you would like to suggest a specific text, film or invite a visiting artist for a Theory Tuesdays session in 2012, please come to the planning session with your ideas. We will then, collectively, fill in a calendar with everyone's suggestions and begin official sessions starting in February. Below is a list of requirements to keep in mind as you prepare your suggestion(s).
1. TEXTS - Art, architecture, design, critical & social theory texts (in both English AND German).
2. FILMS - By and or about specific artists, art & design movements, etc.
3. VISITING ARTISTS - The visiting artist will be expected to present their work and engage in a discussion about their practice.
4. TRAVEL SERIES - Present your photos, stories and experiences from a specific art event (examples: Venice Biennial, Documenta, Manifesta).
AUF DEUTSCH: Theory Tuesdays is not exclusively an English language reading/discussion group. Please don't hesitate to make suggestions that are in German!

Visiting Artist Talk: Róza El Hassan
"No Corruption, Social Brand Wicker Art"
“No Corruption” was conceived as an international brand to produce functional objects based on wicker techniques. The products of the "No Corruption" brand demonstrate the high level and elegance of objects produced by the most discriminated people, if given temporarily, the same opportunities as the middle class.
In Hungary, about 600,000 people belong to the Roma minority. Most of them live in extreme poverty in small villages in eastern and southern Hungary. One of the traditional crafts of the region is a special wicker technique. When El Hassan arrived in the village of Szendrőlád, the elder masters still knew the ancient and unique techniques of wicker and special wood chip braiding, called szilács.
The starting point for El Hassan was in functional design: laptop-bags and camera-bags made of wicker. "No Corruption, Social Brand Wicker Art" brought together freelance artists and designers, scholars and Roma basket weavers to work alongside one another and develop products.

“See it Again, Say it Again” sheds light on the phenomenon of research in the visual arts. Album 1 - From Kunstkammers to Vanitas
Charlotte Cheetham is a french curator of graphic design and runs the blog manystuff.org. She will visit Corner College and have a lecture about her exploration and promotion of graphic design. Her practice, constantly redefined, is based on an experimental approach embodied in publishing experiences, in exhibition moments, and in a flow of information over the Internet. Working on interpretation, on reinterpretation, she is interested in the thinking process - multi-disciplinary, poetic, experimental and surprising - that leads to the final "form".

Rein Wolfs in conversation with Danh Vo
The relationship between curator and artist is the most decisive and probably most complex factor in the development of an exhibition project. Notions like trust, accomplishment and responsibility are keystones in the strengthening of this relationship. The curator is profiling his exhibition program, is choosing the artists, is setting up the best possible spatial, financial, physical and other necessary conditions and is responsible for the mediation of the artistic message. In a small series of talks, Rein Wolfs (Artistic Director of Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel/Germany) will invite artists who hold a strong and specific position in the force-field of curating.

Danh Vo (1975, Vietnam, resides 2012 in Basel) presented in his solo-show JULY, IV, MDCCLXXVI at Kunsthalle Fridericianum among other pieces a duplicate (original technique of hammered copper; original size and weight) of the Statue of Liberty, entitled WE THE PEOPLE. The exhibition touched fundamental questions in terms of production, finances and logistics, next to more philosophical and political questions. After the show in Kassel, parts of WE THE PEOPLE (will) appear in other exhibition spaces (New Museum New York, Kunstraum Innsbruck, Art Institute and Renaissance Society Chicago, etc).

Film: Un Homme Qui Dort (A Man Asleep)
A young student (Jacques Speisser) decides to have no more interaction with the world than is needed to minimally sustain life. His increasingly automaton-like behavior is coupled with a strange clarity of insight about the world around him. His inner musings, as he wanders the luminous streets of Paris, are narrated in the form of an unwritten diary by Ludmila Mikael. A sublime and sometimes terrifying film about existentialism and ennui, Queysanne’s masterpiece won the 1974 Vigo prize.
“Un Homme Qui Dort” is based on the novel by George Perec who was a member of OuLiPo Group (L' Ouvroir de Littérature Potentielle). OuLiPo also included members such as Marcel Duchamp, Italo Calvino, Oskar Pastior or Raymond Queneau.

To make Żmijewski's artistic practice more transparent, there will also be a screening of "Two Monuments" (2009, 14 min 35 sec, English subtitles) and a discussion about the 7. Berlin Biennale, in which Żmijewski has been invited. The Berlin Biennale, that Żmijewski co-curated with Joanna Warsza and activist group Voina, has had a wide media presence after a project from the Czech artist Martin Zet. Zet asked to hand in Thilo Sarrazin's book "Deutschland schafft sich ab". The session will conclude with a controversial discussion about current artistic practices.

Exploring Avant-Garde Movements in Japan

If the japanese collective Gutai is more or less known internationnally, most generally as filling the gap in an evolutive vision of history of art between "action painting" and performance, many major collectives and avant-garde experiments in Japan (as Mavo, Jikken kobo, Zero Dimension, The Play, Hi Red Center) are still today quite unknown outside Japan. This lecture will present some of the many avant-garde developments that took place in Japan since the start of the twentieth century, and try to highlight their fonctionning and connections with artists and collective outside Japan.
The lecture will be framed by several japanese film screenings at AP News.

A few days after the World Trade Center attacks in 2001, the German avantgarde composer Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928−2007) held a press conference in which − taken out of context − he made the remark that they had been the greatest work of art. This caused great uproar and led to his condemnation by a general public who had not heard of him before. With some ten years distance, this lecture-performance will try to come to a less emotionally charged understanding of the ways in which these enigmatic comments may be interpreted.

‘What does the appointment of art dealer Jeffry Deitch as director of the Los Angeles Museum as director of the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art have to do with the trend of global financialization restarted at the Toronto G20 Summit in 2010? And how does the 25 percent attendance increase at the 2010 Gwanju Biennale fit in the picture?’ The editorial of the first issue of No Order: Art in a Post-Forsit Society, published by Archive Books, suggest that these events are among the symptoms of a global transformation of labor whereby knowledge, creativity, sociability, and ultimately life itself, are taking on the role played by machines in the Fordist era.
No Order magazine focuses on the relationships between contemporary art systems and capitalism’s production processes. By means of an investigation into current creative industries – and their social, economic and semiotic assemblages – the magazine contributions (essays, articles, interviews and dialogues as well as artists’ projects) aim to deconstruct, analyse and intervene within the ambit of the procedures and forms of cognitive capitalism. It concentrate, in particular, on the phenomena of the ‘biennalisation’, ‘financialisation’ and ‘spectacularisation’ of the political, beginning with the control and distribution of forms of artistic education, production and display on a global scale.
The Editorial Board is comprised of a series of transversal figures from various geographic and cultural environments, and includes Asef Bayat, Harun Farocki, Peter Friedl, Maurizio Lazzarato, Sylvère Lotringer, Achille Mbembe, Angela Melitopoulos, Christian Marazzi, Nelly Richard, Florian Schneider, Nomeda & Gediminas Urbonas and Françoise Vergès.
Amongst the numerous contributors to the first, 400 page issue are: Roger M. Burgel, Charles Esche, Harun Farocki, Stephen Willats, Maurizio Lazzarato and Christian Marazzi.
The cover picture is taken from the demonstrations at the Milan Triennale in 1968. The underlying theme of the XIV International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts and Modern Architecture was ‘Large Numbers’. The XIV Triennale never opened. It was occupied by students during the demonstrations and all the exhibition areas were destroyed. ‘Why not try to start again, precisely here in Milan? In that same space in which the great process of social transformation was interrupted?’
Marco Scotini (Editor in Chief of No Order, independent curator and director of the departments of Visual, Multimedia and Performing Arts at NABA, the New Academy of Fine Arts in Milan) and Andris Brinkmanis (coordinator and lecturer for the MA of Visual Arts and Curatorial Studies at NABA and International Editor of No Order) will introduce to the public the first issue of the magazine.

Imitat, Raubkopie oder Fake-Design? Chinesische Baukunst
Das Authentische hat auch in China Konjunktur. In Zeiten der Globalisierung mit ihrem rasanten Verschleiss an ästhetischen Vorbildern und immer kürzeren Frequenzen der Erneuerung, stellen sich Fragen nach Vorbildern und Identität. Der Westen ist schnell mit oberflächlicher Kritik an den echten und vermeintlichen Kopien, die sich im Wildwuchs des chinesischen Aufstiegs zur Weltmacht finden lassen. Doch sind diese Stilblüten wirklich repräsentativ? Oft liefern ausländische Kollegen ihren zweiten Aufguss alter Konzepte, zitieren sich selbst oder transferieren tradierte Typen aus der eigenen Heimat.

Ein Diskurs auf Augenhöhe, der die lokalen Fragen ernst nimmt und unvoreingenommen nach neuen Lösungen sucht, ist dagegen selten anzutreffen. In manchen Fällen mag das kopierfähige Modell die richtige Antwort sein, in anderen die Entwicklung neuer Strategien und die Suche nach angepassten Raumstrukturen, die einer sich entwickelnden Gesellschaft Rechnung tragen. Im Zeitalter der Collage, der Versatzstücke und Zitate, der „Inspiration“ durch fremde Kulturen und der eitlen „Trendsetter“-Architektur, bedarf es genauer Analysen und unvoreingenommener Lösungen, die jenseits hergebrachter Vorbilder mit Neugier und Offenheit den Weg für eine kulturelle Erweiterung suchen. Doch welche Konzepte sind tragfähig im neuen China? Welche kritische Haltung entwickelt sich und mit welchen Argumenten wird sie vorgetragen? Gibt es Lösungen jenseits dogmatischer Festlegungen die auch für die westliche Entwicklung von Belang sein könnten? Schlicht, können wir von China lernen?

Im Zentrum ihrer künstlerischen Arbeiten stehen Eingriffe in bestehende kulturelle Systeme. Dazu bedient sich die !Mediengruppe Bitnik der Strategien des Hackings und erweitert diese zu einer Praxis des Umnutzens, Neuausrichtens und der Kritik. Hacking als künstlerischer Eingriff in ein bestehendes System bedeutet, dass das System für andere Nutzungenn Neunutzungen und Umnutzungen geöffnet wird. Bitnik interessiert sich insbesondere für mediale Systeme, mediatisierte Wirklichkeiten und Live-Medien, die sie in einer Weise reproduziert und manipuliert, dass sie der Betrachterin eine neue Sichtweise auf die Mechanismen ermöglicht. In einer ihrer jüngsten Arbeiten beschäftigt Bitnik sich mit städtischen Überwachungsräumen. Mit einem portablen Koffer, ausgerüstet mit Schachcomputer, Videosender und Richtantenne spüren sie Überwachungs-kamerasignale im Stadtraum auf. Sie entführen das ursprüngliche Überwachungsbild und ersetzten es mit einer Aufforderung zu einem Schachspiel: «Spielst du Schach mit mir? - Du bist Weiss ich bin Schwarz». Der Überwachungsmonitor im Kontrollraum des Überwachenden wird von Aussen übernommen und zu einer Spielkonsole gemacht. Mit der Spielaufforderung durchbricht die !Mediengruppe Bitnik die Machtstruktur der Überwachungssituation – eine subtile Performance für einen einzelnen und speziell ausgewählten Rezipienten.

Aesthetic Journalism
How to Inform Without Informing
Italian writer, curator and artist Alfredo Cramerotti will give an introduction in his book "Aesthetic Journalism: How to Inform Without Informing". Recognising the “blurring of margins between artistic and information practices” as a main feature in contemporary culture, Cramerotti sets out the Who, What, Where, When and How, and Why of Aesthetic Journalism.

Cramerotti identifies this “'investigative approach” in contemporary art and photography as the use of fieldwork, reportage, interviews, document analysis, graphic mapping and information distribution. He cites a number of artists who employ these strategies: Hans Haacke, Martha Rosler, Lukas Einsele, Laura Horelli, Renzo Martens, Alfredo Jaar, Renée Green, The Atlas Group/Walid Raad and Bruno Serralogue. For Cramerotti, Aesthetic Journalism implies the critical use of documentary techniques and journalistic methods where the medium itself undergoes questioning. He posits that aesthetics, understood as a “process in which we open up our sensibility to the diversity of the forms of nature (and manmade environment)” can open up the mechanisms of art and media to expose the limitations of photojournalism, documentation and the ethics of representation. In doing so, Aesthetic Journalism renders productive readings of reality, information, fact, fiction and objectivity.
The concepts outlined in the book have been a key tool in the development of the Chamber of Public Secrets’ curatorial approach for the 8th edition of Manifesta, the European Biennial of Contemporary Art: Manifesta 8 taking place in the region of Murcia, Spain.

The Gentlewoman, a Modern Magazine
Veronica Ditting (Grafikdesignerin und Art Director) spricht über die visuelle Entwicklung der Zeitschrift The Gentlewoman. The Gentlewoman ist eine Zeitschrift für moderne Frauen und erscheint zweimal jährlich. Es geht um starke, echte, modebewusste Frauen und deren Ansichten, Lebensentwürfe und Berufe. Anspruchsvoller Journalismus, Fotografie und Gestaltung werden durch ein kleines Team realisiert. Veronica wird u.a. den Sprung von Fantastic Man zu The Gentlewoman erläutern, auf verschiedene Aspekte der Frauenzeitschrift eingehen und den visuellen Entstehungsprozess zeigen.

Veronica studierte Grafikdesign an der Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam und ist seit 2005 als freischaffende Grafikerin tätig. Sie ist Art Director von den Zeitschriften The Gentlewoman und Fantastic Man und arbeitet vorwiegend im kulturellen Bereich. Bevorzugte Medien sind Bücher und Zeitschriften die in enger Zusammenarbeit mit den Auftraggebern entwickelt werden. Sie arbeitet hauptsächlich in Amsterdam sowie in London.

Criticism of Measure: God and the Naked Woman

Since 2008 Benoît Maire has started writing a manual of aesthetics where images, objects and writing take form to bring forth some of contemporary aesthetics’ main issues. Starting from the differend (insurmountable conflict) between saying and seeing, Benoît Maire works in an in-between where art and philosophy merge into a practical use where forms spread out and surpass one another. Neither philosophy, nor art, the Aesthetics of Differends looks to corrupt classical formats by the experimental use of theory. This reading in Zurich will be based on the relationship between liberalism, nudity, pleasure and language to propose a criticism of measure: the work and thoughts of Manet, Masacio, God, Perry Anderson, Catherine Malabou, Jean-François Lyotard, Bruno Bostells and Judith Butler will notably be at stake.

Stray Topology is a group show of photographic works by students from the F+F Schule fur Kunst und Mediendesign Zurich. The works have been produced in response to an open ended dialogue on the perception of place and its representations. The show includes a screening and discussion as part of Theory Tuesdays.
Taking the position that place is both exactly where it is and a digression from itself, the project examines the encounter with place through perspectives on urbanism, architecture and literature.
These vantage points animate our relationship to place, suggesting a meshing of subjective experience with the processes of recollection. The project considers the politics of place in relation to the selection, construction and mediation of the photographic image.

From March till July 2011 Dutch graphic designers Bart de Baets (Knokke, Belgium, 1979) and Sandra Kassenaar (Johannesburg, South Africa, 1982) were resident artists at the Townhouse Gallery in Cairo.
Due to the recent events in Egypt and especially its capitol, their initial date of arrival on the 1st of February 2011 was postponed for a month. Being stunned by the political tidal wave flooding the country, the resignation of Hosni Mubarak and the phenomenon of having a curfew — something they had only heard of in World War II stories — the designers found themselves gazing from the sidelines, not knowing how exactly to react to all of this. They asked themselves ‘Would it be arrogant to confront the Egyptians with our assumptions? And ‘isn’t it ignorant to pretend to have a nose bleed?’
Success and Uncertainty
Their unclear position and the new situation the country found itself in proved to be an inspiring discovery, which eventually lead to the project "Success and Uncertainty." The title of this work is an existing headline taken from the 12th of February 2011 front page of "The Evansville Courier & Press," a local Indiana newspaper reporting Mubarak’s resignation as the president of Egypt.

On Wednesday June 1st 2011 a lightbox was hung outside the Townhouse Gallery that announced the start of the project and showcased the first of twenty-one posters. During the month of June 2011, each day a new poster was presented, generating a growing exhibition. The daily changing posters could be seen both in- and outside of the gallery and — just like newspapers — showed bold statements and gruesome facts, next to light-hearted messages, such as casual observations and rumours that caught Sandra and Bart’s attention during their residency. The content provided by both therefore created a clash of information that will influence the way one reads a poster. It was this constant dialogue between the designers that lead to "Success and Uncertainty."

As part of the F+F Schule fur Kunst und Mediendesign show "Stray Topology", Theory Tuesdays will screen excerpts from Robinson in Ruins directed by Patrick Keiller. The film excerpts will be followed by a discussion on the role of ruin aesthetics in relation to the sites and non-places of urban modernity. Mary Maclean and students in the project will hold a critical discussion of the work in the exhibition.

Pursue Other Avenues is an experiment which takes the form of an open and public "exhibition making workshop". By showing the negotiation, research, and dialogue that typically finishes before the vernissage this experiment aims to give participants an understanding of artists and their work, greater to that of seeing a mere static display of material products. This experiment views all participants as producers, audience, critics, and curators, and with the aid of Isabelle Krieg, Clare Kenny, and Flurin Bisig everyone present will contribute to the development of the exhibition process. This experiment will display the traditionally private stages of an exhibition—doing away with the traditionally public stage entirely. Contrary to most exhibitions, Pursue Other Avenues will not be pure documentation of prior actions, discussions, or collaborations, but the exhibition will be the discourse and connections as they are created. The exhibition becomes flexible and public, and by the time it ‘matures’ it will not then be arrested and stagnate, but this will signal its end.

David will introduce some historical artists' publications and trace one origin story for this genre of experimental books. It won't be a full history - maybe a one hour chapter from a 10 part drama mini-series - but there will be a lot of action and adventure. In the mix will be content from three recent shows that he has assembled from the library collection at MoMA - Access to Tools: Publications from the Whole Earth Catalog, 1968-1974, Scenes from Zagreb and Millennium Magazine.

A PARADISE OF LETTERS (AN EXHIBITION THAT NEVER TOOK PLACE)

For a long time, Letterism – established by Isidore Isou – has remained the unknown avant-garde of European Post-war art. Using copies and documents, A Paradise of Letters looks at two aspects of the movement’s production: their notion of a ”metagraphic” or ”hypergraphic” novel, and their experiments with a ”discrepant”, ”chiseling” and ”nuclear” cinema. The display and accompanying lectures will ask the speculative, hypothetical question: what would be the result if these largely forgotten practices were reinscribed into the narrative of post-war poetry, art and cinema?

A Paradise of Letters is organized by Jonas (J) Magnusson and Kim West. Both will give a lecture (each 1h) about the following topics:
”Hypergraphics, or the art of re-reading and re-writing our world-text” by Jonas (J) Magnusson
Jonas (J) Magnusson will discuss the hypergraphic novels by Isidore Isou (Les Journaux des Dieux, ”The God's Diaries”, 1950; Initiation à la haute Volupté, ”Initiation to High Voluptuousness”, 1960; Jonas ou le corps à la recherche de son âme, ”Jonah, or the Body Searching for its Soul”, 1984), Gabriel Pomerand (Saint Ghetto des Prêts, ”St Ghetto of the Loans”, 1950) and Maurice Lemaître (Canailles, ”Riff-raff”, 1950).
Metagraphics (or post-writing), invented by Isodore Isou in 1950, and four years later renamed hypergraphics (or super-writing), aimed both at subverting the novel as it was known at the time, and at extending Letterist painting to the totality of characters of all writing systems in their existing or invented transcriptions, seen through their ideographic, lexical and alphabetic categories.

With their first Letterist films, Traité de bave et d’éternité and Le film est déjà commencé? (both 1951), Isidore Isou and Maurice Lemaître wanted to radically extend cinema’s scope of possibilities. Scratching the film frames, separating images and sounds, voices and bodies, and employing the cinema theater as an aesthetic element, they introduced a number of innovative techniques that predated the experiments of ”structural” and ”expanded” cinema, as well as the renegotiations of film language by the Nouvelle Vague filmmakers.
In his combined lecture and screening, Kim West will discuss Isou’s and Lemaître’s classic films, as well as the work of other Letterist filmmakers such as Marc’O (”Nuclear Cinema”, 1952, Closed Vision, 1954, Les Idoles, 1968), Gil Wolman (L’anti-concept, 1952), and Roland Sabatier (such as Pensiez-vous (vraiment) voir un film de Roland Sabatier?, 1973).

"Traité de bave et d'éternité" est un film expérimental français écrit et réalisé par Isidore Isou en 1951, produit par Marc'O, et monté avec l'aide de Maurice Lemaître.
Ce film, qui fit scandale à Cannes en 1951 et reçut le Prix des Spectateurs d'Avant-Garde, est basé sur le principe de ce qu'Isou appelle le montage discrépant, qui consiste en une disjonction totale entre le son et l'image, traités de manière autonome sans aucune relation signifiante.
Ainsi, la bande-son est constituée de poèmes lettristes (servant de générique et d'interludes), auxquels s'adjoint une narration contant l'histoire de Daniel, auteur d'un manifeste pour un nouveau cinéma (le cinéma discrépant), de son discours face à un public hostile et de son histoire d'amour avec une dénommée Ève.
L'autonomisation du son a pour but de le faire s'épanouir pleinement, sans tenir compte de l'image, lui offrant ainsi toute la richesse stylistique de la prose, devenant un véritable roman parlé (procédé qui inspirera notamment Chris Marker pour son film La Jetée).
La bande-image, quant à elle, constituée, en grande partie, de found footage, présente une succession d'images banales : Isou errant dans le quartier de Saint-Germain-des-Près ou en compagnie de personnalités (comme Cendrars ou Cocteau), des fragments de films militaires récupérés dans les poubelles de l'armée ou d'exercices de gymnastique filmés, et des plans d'actualités de personnalités de l'époque, telle l'actrice Danièle Delorme.
Ces images servent de prétexte à l'utilisation de la ciselure, procédé rendu en peignant, grattant ou rayant directement la pellicule, séparant ainsi chaque photogramme, habituellement perdu dans le mouvement général d'un film, pour l'explorer en lui-même et l'anéantir. L'image se retrouve parfois réduite à des écrans blancs ou noirs à divers moments du film.
